Windows Mobile is a compact mobile operating system developed by Microsoft and designed for use in smartphones and mobile devices.
The current version is called 'Windows Mobile 6.5. It is based on the kernel of Windows CE 5.2 and features a suite of basic applications developed using Microsoft Windows API. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows, the feature-wise and aesthetically. Also, third-party software development is available for Windows Mobile, and software can be purchased through the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.
Originally appearing as Pocket PC 2000 operating system, most Windows Mobile devices come with a pen pen, used to enter commands by tapping it on screen. Microsoft announced a completely new phone platform, Windows 7 Phone Series, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 15, 2010. Phones running Windows Mobile 6.x is not upgradeable to version 7.
Windows Mobile's share of the Smartphone market is down year-on-year, decreasing 20% in Q3 2009. This is the 4th most popular smartphone operating system, with 7.9% market share worldwide smartphone (after Symbian, BlackBerry OS and iPhone OS). In the U.S., this is the 3rd most popular smartphone operating system for use in business (after the BlackBerry OS and iPhone OS), with 24% share in the enterprise users.
